Springs of Venus

School environmental design assignment.

This environment is meant to be a temple of the Roman goddess, Venus. Goddess of Love and Beauty. With the character being a pilgrim visiting the temple. The design of the temple is mean to shine a light on the goddess' traditional aspects along with her nautical origin story.

Initial Ideation

The main idea is that the character is making a pilgrimage to a temple of venus
The design of the temple incorporates the historical greco-roman influences along with the goddess' traditional motifs of beauty and love
However, I wanted her oceanic origins to shine through the motifs much like the painting, Birth of Venus. So I made sure to include motifs of various sea life often known for their beauty like jelly fish and sea shells
Thumbnail 3 was chosen for its more personal feel which more accurately reflects the sentiments and awe the character is supposed to feel while visiting this temple
I also wanted to have flowing water to be a key feature of the temple to further the feeling of awe and to give the place a atmosphere of ethereal tranquility

Design Refinement

In the design refinement, I turned the originally indoor scene into an outdoor one
Removing the ceiling made it less claustrophobic and letting more light in would make the scene more dreamy
I also pushed the towers closer together to avoid tangents and for better scene composition to add depth
The mosaic idea was removed as it would be too distracting from the focus of the image due to the imbalance of visual interest
The colours were kept light and plain, sticking to the whites we associate with greco-roman buildings while incorporating subtle hues of blue and pink that echo the motifs of the goddess herself
The shade of pink chosen makes sense for the dusk that this scene takes place at and also as a homage not only to the traditional reddish hues of love but also to the pretty coral pink of the sea
